In February 2018, after spending a year in jail on bribery charges, Jae Y. Lee walked free after an appeals court reduced then suspended his sentence.

The heir of the Samsung empire was accused of bribing a confidante of the now-impeached South Korean president to help secure a controversial merger.

The verdict was made partly on the grounds that Lee’s role was a matter of “passive compliance to political power” though prosecutors are appealing.

Lee became Samsung Electronics president in 2009 and was named vice chairman in 2013.

His father, Samsung’s chairman, suffered a heart attack in 2014 and remains hospitalized on the top floor of Seoul’s Samsung Medical Center.
