Abdu Maikaba has said he hopes to win his first major trophy as a coach when he leads Akwa United to victory in Sunday’s Aiteo Cup final in Lagos.
Niger Tornadoes, who won the 2000 edition of this cup competition, stand between Akwa United and Maikaba in this quest.
Former Enyimba and Wikki Tourists coach Maikaba has guided the Uyo to finish fourth in the NPFL and now wishes to go all the way in the cup.
“This is a lifetime chance for me to win a national honour as a coach and I hope to make the most of this opportunity,” physics graduate Maikaba said.
“We have left nothing in our preparations for this final so that we will be the winners of the Aiteo Cup on Sunday.”
‘The Promise Keepers’ Akwa United are the highest scoring team in the Aiteo Cup having recorded 23 goals and they will be up against a Tornadoes side who eliminated league champions Plateau United as well as cup holders FC Ifeanyiubah.
“Tornadoes have had a fine run in the competition, they stopped the league champions Plateau United and also the cup holders FC Ifeanyiubah,” the coach said.
“But we have scored the most goals in this competition and I believe that it’s goals that determine winners of any game.
“I believe we keep scoring on Sunday to give us the trophy.”
Akwa United, who won the cup competition two years ago, have two injury concerns leading up to Sunday’s final–winger Friday Ubong is sweating to be fit after a hip problem and Obodo Olisema, who is nursing a cut.
