Congratulations are in order to Blue Ivy Carter, as she is now one of the youngest people to receive a Grammy nomination in history.
On December 11, 8-year-old Carter was added to the list of Grammy nominees for Best Music Video for Beyoncé’s “Brown Skin Girl.” Carter made an appearance in the stunning music video (which also featured former Essence cover star Naomi Campbell and Lupita Nyong’o,) and has vocals on the song as well. She also has other cameos in major visual music projects, like Homecoming and Lemonade, which was released when she was just four years old.
Carter shares this record with Leah Peasall of The Peasall Sisters, who was 8-years-old when the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack won Album of the Year in 2002. Peasall performed on the track, “In the Highways.”
In November 2019, Blue Ivy won a Soul Train Award for the “Brown Skin Girl” video that she shared with Beyoncé, WizKid, and Saint Jhn. She also ended the night with a Songwriter’s Award. In early 2020, Blue Ivy then won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration for the video.
The Recording Academy confirmed Carter’s nomination by reiterating their requirements for nominations, which are: “for a featured artist to be recognized as a nominee, 1) the artist must be credited and recognized as a featured artist; and 2) there must be significant performance and artistic contribution by the featured artist beyond what might be considered merely an accompaniment.”
Blue Ivy has had quite the busy year. Last month, director Matthew A. Cherry announced that she would be the narrator for the audiobook adaptation of his Oscar-winning short film Hair Love. The story is about a Black father named Stephen and his daughter, Zuri, as they learn how to do her hair. The audiobook is now available anywhere audiobooks are sold.
