Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg is currently in the UK to attend important events organised during the London Shipping Week. Yesterday, Ian Borg met with IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is a United Nations specialised agency that sets global standards for shipping and is responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. Malta has been a member since 1996 and currently holds a position on the council.
During his visit with Secretary General Lim, Minister Borg discussed Malta’s commitment to the IMO’s aims and objectives. Malta is a strong supporter of the aims and objectives of the organisation and is committed to the current approach towards a universal implementation of IMO rules and regulations for the enhancement of safety, security and pollution prevention standards at sea and in port. Ian Borg also reaffirmed that safeguarding the environment against climate change requires a global response, and the same holds for shipping, which is an international sector.
Minister Borg expressed Malta’s pride in the organisation’s record of steering the industry, which makes shipping safer, greener and cleaner, while paving the way for future sustainable economic growth which involves this sector. He also discussed Malta’s initiatives to support the IMO as well as the technical assistance provided by Malta, such as important funding. Minister Borg stated that Malta will be seeking re-election in Category C of the Council in November 2017, and seeks to further consolidate its active participation in the work of the IMO. He emphasised the importance of Malta as a representative of both the Mediterranean region and a number of small island economies.
The Ballast Water Management Convention, which entered into force on 8th September 2017 and was ratified by Malta last week, was also discussed. This convention marks an important step towards the protection of the marine environment from the transfer of harmful aquatic organisms in ballast water carried by ships.
In the evening, Minister Borg attended the Lancaster House Reception hosted by Secretary of State Chris Grayling and Chairman of Maritime UK David Dingle. Today, Minister Borg is expected to attend the UK IMO Council Election Reception hosted by Minister John Hayes.
