WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RELIGION AND FAITH?

“Faith” is typically used to denote a belief in something that cannot be substantiated empirically, e.g., “I have faith that I will be well tomorrow”, “I have faith that if I invest $10 in stock xyz, I will be a trillionaire within 10 years”, “I have faith that good will reign over evil”, and such. One can view “faith” as a set, whose elements (members) are beliefs that are not demonstrable. Religious people state that, for example, “I have faith in an heavenly God”, “I have faith that I will go to Heaven if I live by God’s tenets”, hence, religion is a member (is an instance) of the set “faith”. Faith is the collection of all things that one can be “faithful” about, religion is as example of this collection.

Of course, I realize that that distinction was probably the farthest thing from your mind when you asked the question. But as they say in Brooklyn “live and loin”. (I only have faith that that is what they say in Brooklyn. I have never lived or been there – even though I lived “across the river” for many years.)
