Fuel economy has become a key consideration for many individuals, especially because of the rising gas prices and the environmental impact of increased gas consumption. This is why many car enthusiasts are now assigning a significant weightage to fuel economy when deciding on which vehicle to buy or lease.
While the general perception is that sports cars are the worst gas guzzlers, you’d be surprised to know that quite a few SUVs and trucks also consume an incredibly high amount of fuel.
This list looks at some of the top gas guzzlers of the year across different price points, model types, and car specifications and examines their EPA ratings.
10. Mercedes-Benz S560
Mercedes-Benz S560 is a luxury sedan that combines luxury with performance. It delivers a great driving experience thanks to the higher-output yet more compact 4.0L Biturbo V8 engine. The car boasts a 463 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of peak torque. Additionally, the 9-speed automatic provides more seamless delivery of power and ensures a quiet comfortable ride.
While Mercedes is a treat to look at (and drive), as expected, it is not the most fuel-efficient sedan. It delivers 21 mpg overall, with 17 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
9. Land Rover Range Rover 5.0L V8 Supercharged
The 2019 Range Rover offers an exciting array of features and promises great performance for today’s tech-savvy and safety-conscious car enthusiasts. It comes with a 5.0L V8 inter-cooled supercharged engine and delivers 518 horsepower.
It also offers an 8-speed automatic transmission overdrive, an integrated navigation system, 21″ aluminum wheels, driveline traction control and 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS). While it does offer quite a lot, it performs poorly when it comes to gas consumption. It is definitely a gas guzzler at is offers only 16 mpg on the road.
8. Dodge Durango SRT AWD
Dodge Durango SRT AWD is undoubtedly one of the most powerful vehicles in its class. Equipped with a HEMI 6.4L V8 engine, the car boasts a 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. It also features an 8-speed automatic transmission and is great for towing too.
While it is incredible to drive, has ample capacity, and is equipped with all the must-have features; the car’s fuel economy isn’t the best in the class. It delivers 17 mpg overall, with 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway
7. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
The Corvette is built for performance. The car delivers an impressive 0 to 60 mph in about 3.7 seconds and features a 6.2L V8 engine. It offers up to 460 horsepower and a choice between a 7-speed manual with Active Rev Matching or an 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission. While the integrated aerodynamic and cooling components enable you to have great driving experience, the convertible doesn’t score high on fuel economy.
Though the performance is pretty good, the gas mileage does not impress. The mileage is about 13 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.
6. Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
Dodge Charger has been a long-time favorite because of its performance, power, and drive. The 2019 Charger SRT® Hellcat promises an unforgettable drive as it features a Supercharged 6.2L HEMI® SRT V8 engine and delivers 707 horsepower.
Even when you’re driving at high speeds, the engine doesn’t heat up because of the air induction hood with dual heat extractors. However, this high performance does impact the vehicle’s fuel economy. In terms of gas mileage, you can get an unremarkable 13 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.
5. Nissan Armada
Nissan Armada is a car enthusiast’s delight but it is also a gas guzzler. Featuring the Endurance 5.6L V-8 390hp VVEL engine, the car delivers 390 horsepower. It also comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and a range of modern safety features. Additionally, the Armada also features 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) and 18″ aluminum wheels.
While the car looks stunning and is fun to drive, it does rather poorly on fuel economy. It only delivers 15 mpg overall and 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.
4. Rolls-Royce Phantom
Rolls-Royce Phantom has been synonymous with Luxury. Many car enthusiasts even say that it is one of the best combinations of engineering and technology available on the market today. The Phantom offers incredible power, thanks to its V12 twin-turbo engine, and delivers 563 hp.
However, the massive size of the car and the direct injection engine don’t do much for the fuel economy of the vehicle. In fact, the Phantom has one of the worst EPA fuel economy ratings, as it gets about getting 12 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.
3. Ferrari GTC4Lusso
Ferrari GTC4Lusso is a vehicle that’s sporty, powerful and luxurious. It features a 12-cylinder, V15 engine which delivers a maximum power output of 690 cv. Also, Ferrari’s 4RM system that facilitates drivability in all weather conditions has been integrated with the rear-wheel steering in the Ferrari GTC4Lusso.
While the supercar is great to drive and according to Ferrari, is the most powerful in its segment, it does not do well when it comes to fuel economy. Which is expected because its USP is a powerful performance. GTC4Lusso’s gas consumption is around 12 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.
2. Bentley’s Mulsanne
Bentley surely made a statement with the Mulsanne. The vehicle features a hand-built engine, a unique 6.75 liters twin-turbocharged V8 engine that scores high on both power and performance. Additionally, the 8-speed automatic transmission with rear-wheel drive provides smooth acceleration. The drive is smooth as well because of the air spring suspension which is managed electronically by the Continuous Damping Control system to absorb bumps and adjust ride height.
While the car gets a thumbs up for the handcrafted luxurious design, it is a glass guzzler. The vehicle’s gas consumption is around 11 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.
1. Bugatti Chiron
Bugatti Chiron is an engineering marvel. The sleek design, incredible performance, and brilliant drive make the car stand out from others on the market. The Chiron is powered by a quad-turbocharged 8 l W16 engine, that generates 1,500 hp and delivers 1,600 Nm of torque.
To deliver the remarkable performance, according to Bugatti, 60,000 liters of air are pumped through the engine every single minute and 800 liters of water circulates through the engine to keep it cool which generating extraordinary power.
However, all this also puts Chiron on top of our gas guzzlers list. It is the least fuel-efficient vehicle of the year as it only delivers 11 mpg overall and 9 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on the highway.
