A brush with charity: paintings by John Martin Borg on sale

An exhibition of some 50 paintings, inspired by Caritas Malta’s work with people who are in dire physical and mental need, is being held at the Curia this weekend.

Entrance to the exhibition at the Archbishop’s Curia in Floriana will be free of charge, but the paintings, by John Martin Borg, are being sold in aid of Caritas.

This will be Mr Borg’s 26th solo exhibition, following A Spiritual Perspective, which was held just over a year and a half ago at Il-Ħaġar Museum in Victoria, Gozo.

Speaking to this newspaper, Mr Borg said the main painting at that Gozo exhibition, which had been dedicated to the theme of spiritual mercy, elicited the question: ‘What will you do with this mercy – keep it to yourself, or share it?’

Later, when learning more about Caritas Malta’s work, he was moved to put up the exhibition. It will be made up of around 50 paintings, mostly watercolours and some very recent acrylic abstracts.

The display will be a cross section of the different styles, including abstract, maritime, landscape and religious, stretching from 1998 to just a few days ago.

Mr Borg first exhibited his work at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta back in 1979.

Since then, he has exhibited extensively both locally and abroad, with a large number of his works forming part of important private and public collections.

Caritas Malta’s exhibition will be held at the Archbishop’s Curia in Floriana and will be open today between 9am and 7.30pm and tomorrow between 9am and noon.
