Yorubas urged to preserve culture

A Socio-cultural group, Kaaro-Oojiire Omo Oodua Foundation (KOOOF), has called on the Yorubas at home and in the diaspora to preserve their language and culture.

It urged the Southwest states not to allow Yoruba culture to go into extinction.

KOOOF Chairman Asiwaju Olu Mayungbe, who is  based in the United States (U.S.), said Yoruba language and culture face the danger of extinction, if it is not upheld in the face of danger steering it in the face.

Speaking in Ibadan, he called on all true Yoruba sons and daughters to rise up to the challenge of preserving Yoruba language, adding it must be allowed to perish.

“Yoruba language must not be allowed to die. The non-speaking of our language in various homes in Yoruba land today is really worrisome. So, we all have historic responsibility to protect our heritage,” he said.

He said the group was borne out of the great concern about gradual erosion of Yoruba culture, noting that prominent Yoruba leaders were major backers for the preservation of the people’s culture.

The group has the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Eniitan Ogunwusi and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi as its Grand Patrons and the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji and Mr. Niyi Akintola (SAN) as its patrons.
