Manchester United legend, Peter Schmeichel, has predicted that Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, will win this year’s FIFA Men’s Player award.
He said that the player is most likely to break Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s stranglehold of the prestigious award.
Modric has been impressive with Real Madrid and Croatian national team this year.
Ronaldo, winner of the accolade in 2016 and 2017, lifted the Champions League for the fifth time last season with Real Madrid.
Liverpool star, Mohamed Salah is also in the race for the prize alongside Real star Modric and all are very creditable candidates.
Despite clinching a domestic cup double with Barcelona last term, Messi didn’t make the three-man shortlist and Schmeichel has explained why he thinks Modric could claim the individual prize this time.
“I expect so, I think so yes,” Schmeichel said on CNN when asked about Modric’s chances.
“The only reason for that is that Luka [Modric] was so incredibly good in every department of how you have to judge a good player.
“First of all his history is incredible.
“The story that he can tell from when he was a young kid and what he has done with his football career, it makes him an interesting guy.
“But what he did in the World Cup, together with the coach and his teammates, in producing this amazing result for Croatia is just incredible.
“He was scoring goals, he was creating goals, he was fighting.
“He was just an incredible player in that period.”
